Step-by-step: install Ledger Live

  1. Download: Visit the official Ledger Live page and download the version for macOS, Windows, Linux, Android, or iOS. Always download from the official site to avoid tampered installers.
  2. Install: Run the installer and open Ledger Live. Grant permissions if prompted. Ledger Live will check for the latest firmware and app updates for your device.
  3. Set up a device: If you already own a Ledger device, select “Connect my device” and follow the prompts. If you’re new, Ledger Live will guide you through initializing a new device, creating a PIN, and generating your 24‑word recovery phrase.
  4. Firmware & apps: Use Ledger Live to update your firmware and install only the apps for the cryptocurrencies you plan to manage (Bitcoin app, Ethereum app, etc.).

Pairing and adding accounts

With Ledger Live open and your device connected and unlocked, go to the Accounts tab to add a new account. Choose the cryptocurrency, open its app on your device, and Ledger Live will detect and add the account. Repeat this for each asset you want to manage. Important: verify addresses on your device screen before receiving funds.

Using Ledger Live features

  • Portfolio view: See balances across all accounts and a historical chart of your portfolio’s value.
  • Send & receive: Create transactions in Ledger Live and confirm them on the device to sign securely.
  • Manager: Install or remove apps on the device, update firmware, and manage device settings.
  • Discover & Earn: Explore integrated partners, staking, and earn programs (availability depends on region).
  • Swap: Use built-in swap or partners to exchange assets — confirm every trade on the device.

Security best practices for Ledger Live

Ledger Live offers a secure environment, but your security also depends on how you manage devices and backups:

  • Never share your 24‑word recovery phrase. Ledger support will never request it.
  • Record your recovery phrase on the provided sheet and consider a metal backup for long-term protection.
  • Keep Ledger Live and your device firmware up-to-date.
  • Always verify transaction details (amounts and addresses) on your Ledger device screen before approving.
  • Use a dedicated, trusted device to access Ledger Live and avoid public or compromised computers when possible.

Connecting to dApps and advanced integrations

Ledger Live can interface with supported dApps directly or via third-party wallets (e.g., MetaMask). When connecting to a dApp:

  • Confirm the connection request and review permissions in Ledger Live or on the device.
  • Always sign transactions using your Ledger device — never sign from a hot wallet if the transaction requires private key access.
  • Check compatibility at the official Compatible Apps page before attempting advanced integrations.

Troubleshooting & support

If Ledger Live fails to detect your device, try the following: ensure your device is unlocked and the correct app is opened on the device; try a different USB cable or port; restart Ledger Live and your computer; or consult the Support center. For faster help, the community forum has many user-contributed solutions.

Recovery & moving funds

If you lose your device, your assets are recoverable using your 24‑word recovery phrase on another Ledger device or compatible wallet. If you suspect the recovery phrase was exposed, move your funds immediately to a new wallet with a fresh recovery phrase. Detailed recovery steps are available in the Recovery guide.

Final checklist

  • Downloaded Ledger Live from the official site.
  • Initialized device and recorded 24‑word recovery phrase offline.
  • Installed necessary apps and added accounts in Ledger Live.
  • Performed a small test receive to verify addresses.
  • Backed up recovery phrase in a secure location (consider metal backup).

Ledger Live is built to keep your keys offline while giving you the flexibility to manage and grow your crypto holdings.
